CycleOps Joule 2.0 w/o Heartrate Strap:
Your power data is only as good as how you use it. The CycleOps Joule 2.0 analyzes your data and provides insights to construct an entirely individualized real-world, power based training plan.

The CycleOps Joule is a coach on your cockpit.

We all know that power data is the single most important metric needed in designing an effective training plan. But what do you do with the data? The CycleOps Joule answers most of these questions for you: In addition to using PowerTap's revolutionary, reliable power measurement the Joule uses your historical data along with proprietary, proven algorithms to actually devise an optimal training routine.

The Joule is the jewel that completes your power training crown. The Joule 2.0 is the ultimate dashboard for your existing Powertap ANT+ wireless hub. There are a total of 18 different data points that can be configured by you or your coach within the Joule. Eight of these metrics can be displayed at the same time on your Powertap Joule for real-time, instantaneous feedback about your current workout and, most importantly, how it relates to previous efforts stored in your Joule.

The Joule 2.0 provides an impressive and functional menu of displays that include:
  • Comprehensive Dashboard Display that you configure to display what you want to see while riding.
  • A Summary Report with power output basics compared to previous performances.
  • A current Power Detail Report (including the key on-screen "watts per kilogram" metric you've read about in Lance Armstrong and Chris Charmichael's books).
  • Work Report with the Training Peaks' software (not included) Total Stress Score and Intensity Factor to assess your workout.
  • Peak Power Report for given sustained efforts over several specified durations.
  • Time in Power Zones Report similar to heart training zones we used to use as a primary metric.
  • Time in Heart Rate Zones to complete the interface between physiological load and work output in context.
  • Climbing Report that includes an inclinometer reading for average gradient (how hard was that climb?) and total vertical ascent along with altitude gained and lost.
  • Surges Report that details sudden increases in given increments of power output- how many jumps or accelerations did you do? How powerful were they? How do they compare and improve?
  • Activities summary of intervals, workouts and the segments of each interval performed displayed historically.

Of course the Joule's data is down-loadable for more detailed analysis using Saris Cycling Group's PowerAgent 7.4 software.

A unique "Activity Mode" is user configurable to manage interval workouts and store the data for later research and, most importantly, benchmarking for future workouts: You can see your improvements on the Joule 2.0 dashboard relative to previous stored workouts. There is 20 hours of on board memory storage and a full year of summarized historical performance data (a training log algorithm is included in the unit).

The Joule 2.0 is designed for how we train with power. It uses a compact (but easily readable) display in high contrast black and white that draws low power for long battery life. I wear reading glasses but can read the data on the Joule display without problem without the glasses. There are no audible alarms to preserve battery life.

Dr. Alan Lim, Ph.D, director of Education for the Saris Cycling Group consulted heavily on the algorithms and reports generated by the Joule. These reports and data displays are congruent with most accepted coaching principles using power measurement. Because of this the Joule is a powerful tool to help you unlock the important context hidden in your power meter data with a total of 58 separate metrics from the 18 displayable data points, many unique to the Joule 2.0.

The Joule 2.0 is sold separately from a complete PowerTap unit and is compatible with current versions of ANT + PowerTaps. The PowerTap Joule has 4MB of onboard memory and accepts a microSD data card for additional storage and data transfer. The unit is water resistant for normal rain showers and weighs a scant 74 grams (less than three ounces). The rechargeable lithium-polymer battery has 20 hours of typical charge life on the road.

You already own a PowerTap power meter or are considering training with power. The new CycleOps Joule 2.0 completes the data and interpretation circle needed to fully optimize any power training regimen when combined with a PowerTap ANT+ hub (purchased separately). It is the tool that provides context to your power training data to truly unlock your potential and change your riding into training.
